This session will cover using Canvas for Teachers, a free LMS (Learning Management System) to set up asynchronous and distance learning classes at no cost to instructor or students.  Canvas can also be used to supplement in-person classes. Students can access it and complete work on their own time.

After a brief overview of Canvas capabilities and potential uses, the course will turn towards creating a free Canvas account and setting up a basic Canvas shell (class), with the goal of participants leaving the session with a simple, yet fully functional shell and working knowledge of how to further modify shells to their needs.

We'll also discuss creating content, importing existing content and adapting current lesson plans, student submission types, grading student submissions, adding students to Canvas and familiarizing students with uploading submissions and completing assignments within Canvas.

Prior experience with Canvas a plus, but session assumes zero familiarity with Canvas or any other LMS.

Participants should bring a laptop and will need access to email throughout the session.

Delivering Expanded Educational Opportunities in Correctional Institutions

This collaborative session is geared towards ABE/GED Instructors to share ideas for curriculum development or instructional planning.

Participants should bring a lesson that you use in the classroom that is engaging. Also bring a website that you use (either to plan or teach with) that others may not know about.

Adult education teachers come from diverse educational backgrounds and many without any training to teach reading skills. To help the struggling reader, teachers need to know what are the most important skills that will help learners make better scores across the academic subjects. We will preview several strategies of teaching academic reading that will help teachers provide learners with a better understanding of how to approach science, social studies and other academic subjects and will give learners a more organized way to approach learning course content.
